The mere thought of Holi brings a sense of happiness and beautiful aromas in our minds. We start thinking of next year’s Holi just after winding up present one. Last year’s Holi was quite a dull affair due to Covid 19 scare and considering the present scenario things look pretty much the same. So, what can we do to make this Holi a little enjoyable and memorable one?? I’ve come up with a few points to do so and thought of sharing same with all.
1. Colours: let’s make organic colours at home using beet root extract / haldi /tesu flowers/ pea flowers/coffee powder.
2. Snacks and sweets: use whole wheat flour instead of maida , use ghee and mustard oil instead of hydrogenated oils, use jaggary/ dry fruits as sweeteners instead of refined sugar. Try to use some portions of ragi/ buckwheat/ poppy seeds / pumpkin seeds in preparations as they are quite healthy. Make khoa at home instead of buying adulterated one.
3. Diet: leave home after having sumptuous breakfast like oats/ daliya and a healthy drink like aam panna/ bael sharbat to keep hydrated while playing holi. As its quite hot already this year.
4. Spreading happiness: share with those who are unfortunate. Many families lost their family members/ had illness or lost their job. Lets help them out in at least one way be it monetary/ with food items/ with new clothes. Give a day off to your employee to spend it with his/ her family. Festival is theirs too.
5. Sponsors a child’s education/ support any crow funding project. We have to learn to return our bit to the society.
6. Go to an old age home/ orphanage and spend little HOLI TIME with them, sponsor a meal and enjoy it with them.
7. Spare the animals, they don’t enjoy colours.

Being a dietician it’s my duty to give a statutory warning. Which is to eat little Holi snack everyday and enjoy Holi for a week rather than overeating in a day and having stomach issues.
